APD SUPPORT UK SURVEY OF APD PROVISION BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN ENGLAND AND WALES

In 2021-22 APD Support UK Trustees contacted all the Local (Education) Authorities/LAs in England and Wales to ask them about their support provision for children with APD, and they were all sent information about APD. Most of them required a Freedom of Information request to be made before they would reply.

Here you can read the findings of the survey.

OUTCOMES

A reply by Alyson Mountjoy, Chair APD Support UK, was later sent to each LA. It included further information on supporting learners with APD and reminded them that providing support for APD was a legal obligation for LAs, sensory teams, and schools.

As a result of the survey and our response, some LAs now do more to understand and support APD. There are others that still result in parents having to make a formal complaint or obtain an EHC Plan before adequate, appropriate support is provided. However, implementing a blanket policy singling out APD to not be supported has been the worrying response by an increasing number of LAs. This meets the definition of disability discrimination. Excluding children from support who have APD, or any other medical condition, disability, or any form of additional needs, can therefore be deemed unlawful.

If your child has been refused support, please visit the "Get involved" page to download a letter template. There is also one for adults in education who are not being supported.

It discusses the importance of testing for hearing loss and APD, and protecting your hearing.

Also how to protect your hearing, when to seek professional help. Remember the interaction of hearing with learning, cognition and mental health and the importance of checking your hearing and auditory processing.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
